LISP 2023 Film Festival Stage Play Winner, Crystal Springs by Kathy Rucker
- Can you please tell us about you and your daily life? I must confess - I am a binge writer. I don’t write everyday. Most days I am reading, listening, looking, searching for an idea that excites me. Once that spark is found, the white board comes out and the fun/agony begins. And I mean agony, it is a birthing process! Once I feel that I know the characters, have a rough outline, the writing begins. - When and how did you get into theatre? What brings me joy now is the theatre. I love writing plays. I adore working with directors and actors. Prior to writing plays, I produced commercials and worked on films. And at one point, I owned an art gallery. But theatre is my passion. Watching one of my plays come alive on stage with the cast and crew is the most exciting thing. It’s being part of something bigger than myself. - How does it feel to have your work recognised?
Getting a response to my work, any response, is a gift. And winning an award or getting a production? It’s the icing on the cake, no, it’s the whole cake! - What's the best and most challenging thing about writing a StagePlay ?
The most challenging part of writing is working in isolation. If I get stuck, I tend to spiral into the “this is crap” phase. At that point, I take a walk or call my husband or both. Fresh air and encouraging words help. - How did you develop the idea for your LISP-selected play? Is there a story behind your story? And, how long have you been working on it?
Crystal Springs took about a year to write. At the time my daughter, who was in middle school, had asked for a smart phone. All her friends were getting them. I began researching the stories about cyber-bullying, social media and cat fishing. The fears that come with our child exploring that world prompted this play and convinced us to hold off for a couple of years before she got her phone.

Tips - find a story that really excites and engages you. If you’re like me, you’re going to be working on it for a long time! - What's the best thing and the most challenging thing about competitions and festivals?
The best thing about competitions and festivals is you’re opening up your professional circle, be it virtual or in person. And you’re owning the fact that you are a writer. It’s taking a big step to press that SEND button. - Lastly, do you recommend the writers submit to LISP?
LISP is a respected, valuable, diverse organization that honors writers and their process. I was so impressed by the talent and the accomplishments of the folks who are LISP. I am truly honored to be part of this festival.
